NaNoWriMo prep includes decision making and software

Two weeks until November, and I’m starting to doubt I’ll get 50K words for NaNoWriMo this year. I don’t think my story idea is strong enough. I don’t know how many characters I need or where the story begins. Should it be on the east coast or right in my own backyard? Can I make key plot decisions by midnight on Halloween?

The one thing I know for certain is that I don’t want the doubt to keep me from trying. So far, any work I’ve done has been research, but I need shift focus to making decisions on plot and character. I know the gist of what I want to write, now I need to figure out details.

I do know one thing: I’d like to give Scrivener writing software a try during NaNoWriMo. I like the thought of being able to move chapters around easily and being able to store everything, writing, research, outline, etc., all in one place. The software sounds amazing, but I’ve read there is a learning curve with it. Thankfully, it has a trial version so I can try it before I buy it.

If I win NaNoWriMo and like Scrivener, I can buy the software at 50 percent off. If I don’t win, I can buy it at a 20 percent discount. Especially since I have no full-time job right now, I am always happy to find a discount.

  1. Just a thought: On some of the questions — like east coast or not, for example — maybe try simply flipping a coin. Once you have the basics written, it will be much easier to go back and change it if you decide to make a change later on. The hard part is getting the initial writing done. Focus on that in your 30-day challenge. Let the editing and refining come later, as needed.
